Metro Ecosse’s Head of Broadcast Services Works With BBC Westminster On Special Edition of Daily Politics
On Friday July 11th, our Edinburgh-based Head of Broadcast Services Ranald Neilson and his team delivered a live broadcast of BBC2’s Daily Politics show led by Scottish-born journalist and broadcaster Andrew Neil. With just 10 weeks left to go before Scotland votes for or against independence, the special edition discussion show was broadcast live from Edinburgh on the subject of the Scottish Referendum.
The Penthouse Conference Room at Edinburgh’s Double Tree by Hilton (formerly The Point Hotel) was reserved for the broadcast with its stunning views across Edinburgh Castle and the city.
Ranald, briefed by The Broadcast Consultancy Scotland, was responsible for providing equipment, crew and services to BBC Westminster including lighting design and equipment, sound equipment, and a four camera Portable Production Unit (PPU) which was temporarily installed in the bar area of the hotel. The rigging began the day before and a rehearsal via satellite link was scheduled with London’s BBC Millbank just 45 minutes before the topical discussion was due to air.
Andrew Neil’s guests included Alex Massie of The Spectator, Lesley Riddoch of The Scotsman, Professor John Curtice of the University of Strathclyde, Johann Lamont, MSP and Blair Jenkins, Leader of Yes Scotland.
The broadcast is the first of three with follow-up discussions scheduled for 12th and 14th of September as opinion polls heat up towards Scotland’s referendum day on September 18th.
