Working with Dr Sam Collins - coach, inspirational speaker, author and advocate for the advancement of women - Metro Broadcast took on one of the most spontaneous conferences in its history; the Aspire Making A Difference (M.A.D.) Leadership Programme at London’s Excel. Keeping up the energy and momentum at the two-day event, Dr Collins’ delivery style was spontaneous, charismatic and dynamic. As technical producers, Metro’s team had to be prepared to work off-script and respond to the mood of the moment.
More than 500 women ranging from graduates to board level executives came together to be inspired, feel empowered and develop personal objectives. Although Metro was provided with a running order, the event was mostly orchestrated live from the stage. In tune with the informal atmosphere, Dr Collins collaborated with Metro’s technicians in a very open and ad hoc style as the conference progressed.
Metro’s Project Manager Dave Ashman said, “Ultimately, we wanted to achieve a very informal mood although, if anything, we needed to be over-prepared and ready for anything. Preparing for different scenarios allowed us to keep the production running smoothly and achieve an effortless effect.”
Metro’s staging team created a stunning set consisting of two vast panels at the rear which housed adjacent projection screens. The set had a low-level platform with steps running down to the floor. This meant speakers could be seen from the back of the room yet the platform was accessible to the audience, encouraging interaction and spontaneous participation. Further screens around the room were used to show film clips and testimonials.
With colours reflecting Aspire’s identity, a range of lighting effects was used to alter the mood and reflect the pace and style of the content.
Music, an inspiring playlist curated by Dr. Collins, was a major element of the event; sound levels and tracks were decided upon in the spur-of-the-moment, making for an exciting and stimulating environment.
The conference included speaker sessions, networking breaks and workshops all held in ExCel’s Platinum Suite. Instead of using formal break-out sessions, Dr Collins simply directed the audience to move their chairs into different arrangements or to clear the floor completely, creating an ever-changing dynamic within the room.
Metro’s camera crew was also on hand to film the event and edited it for promotional use on Aspire’s YouTube channel.
After the event, Dr Collins said, “In 15 years and hundreds of events, I have never met a better AV company.”
Metro has been commissioned for the next Aspire Leadership event in October which is set to be bigger and more vibrant than ever before.
